would a dirt bike be a good starter bike?

I was thinking of getting a dirt bike for street use as a begginer bike instead of like a 250 ninja, because im too tall for the smaller sportbikes. would learning to ride on the street on a dirt bike be just as good as learning on a samll cc sportbike? also what are some nice dirt bike options that are out there?

For beginner, a bicycle is the best choice.

Screw bicycles. I started on a birtbike and it helped me a lot. Build up to the super bikes.

There are plenty of dual purpose bikes on the highways that serve the purpose admirably. And I think they'd make an excellent choice for a starter street bike. Also, if you plan on riding street exclusively, there are plenty of supermoto-designed factory bikes availalble with street tires, 17" wheels, better brakes, and strong powerplants. Or... you could purchase a regular 4-stroke dirt bike & make the changes yourself.

First of all dirt bikes are not street legal. There are dual purpose dirt/street bikes which are legal, but they wont go as fast as a regular sports bike and the gas mileage sucks. The ninja 250 is a great buy and I am over 6 feet high and can ride a ninja 250 comfortably because of the upright position. It is a very forgiving bike and is the best to learn on. If you wait few more months Kawa is coming with a new redesigned for the first time in 20 years Ninja 250 which is taller than the current one. Your other choices would be a Ninja 500, Suzuki GS 500, Buell blast, Ninght hawk, Burgman. Good luck.

Yep, get yourself a supermotard motorcycle. They have enough power to get you out of trouble and they are tired in the way they feel unlike the 250 4-stroke motorcycles. It will have a better suspension set-up that you can adjust to suit your riding and bodyweight as well.I think you will learn a lot quicker on one of these and even be able to give it to some of the sportbike riders through the twisties if you end up mastering it!Good luck, I know if I had my time again, I would go one of these types of machines!Troy
