Honda CR-V dies when cold?
 

My 1999 Honda CR-V EX (57,000 miles, Automatic) dies when cold. When first fired up, it idles high as expected, but when I drive it and stop it within about the first mile or two (never more), it dies unless I put my foot on the gas to keep the RPMs up. It does this only when the outside temperature is about 45 degrees or less. The Check Engine light comes on and the error is simply a cylinder misfire (usually 4 errors, for all 4 cylinders). The spark plugs are not the problem, they've been replaced with no change.































After those first miles, it never happens again until the car sits overnight. It has done this for about 3 years, whenever I drive it at 45 degrees or below. I don't want to take it to Honda and have them tell me I need some $300 part or something. It seems to me that the hi idle choke (or whatever passes for that) is just releasing too soon.































Any ideas what to do? Is there a simple adjustment to make? It is cold where we are this winter and this is annoying!

You describe your problem well and it does sound annoying. Inter-mittens are the tough problems to diagnose. The check engine light is a clue in that the same code is generated when the problem happens and the car dies so unfortunately it is no coincidence. Get your self access to a factory service manual to see what different issues can generate that code failure or you can also type your make and model on the Internet along with that failure code that comes from the code reader and there should be many sites with information on the fix. Unfortunately the part for the repair may be more than 300 dollars as foreign car parts are expensive to replace. Good luck.
