blew a head gasket in my 98 sunflower.

anyone know where I can get a good engine? Pref. will ALL accessories already on it.

Why not just replace the headgasket?

You can easy do it in an afternoon.

I decided to do the headgaskets instead of a motor.

Questions:

1) Any GOOD resources for a newbie to do a headgasket change? I would need step by step instructions

2) where do I get the heaqdgaskets from? Dealer?

3) any special tools I would need to remove anything?

pick yourself up a service manual from canadian tire or other car parts stores. This will have a complete walk through of how to do the headgasket. You can get the head gasket from the dealer or other places such as napa. The tools required are not at all specialty tools as a good set of general mechanics tools can probably get the job done. The only tool that you would need is a torque wrench, which can be picked up at your local princess auto for cheap.

yeah no kidding i have been working in a garage with a small heater all winter .. it sucks ! I wear double socks and mechanics gloves and like 4 layers and a coat :smilie_da

My rabbit is sitting nice and warm under my kitchen right now. :smilie_da The head gasket can be done in a weekend, but get a head gasket kit, not just the head gasket. You'll need the intake manifold gasket, exhaust manifold gasket, don't bother trying to reuse those stupid clamps, go buy a hand full of decent hose clamps, and don't forget to flush the rad, and change the oil before you start it up.

Important!
 

after you torque the head bolts to spec using the torque wrench -
you will need a degree gauge (fits between socket and a rachet handle) required for the proper "stretch" :smilie_da required for this motor.

the guage can be found for approx. 13.00 USD at Pepboys Automotive here in USA (part is made in china)


also replace the headbolts (recommended)...

if you attempt to reuse the old stretched bolts they will "bottom out" when you retorque so you will need to use a high quality "stainless steel" washer on each of the old bolts - DO NOT use cheap zinc-chromate washers from the hardware store.
