VIN check

Does anyone here know of anyplace that you can get a VIN check for free? My roomate is looking at getting a car, and is wondering if anyone here knows of a place or someone that can do it for free?

noone for free (except maybe dmv, and they can only tell if it was stolen or totaled)carfax is fairly reasonable though

check around on other forums... a lot of times when someone buys on carfax they will ask if anyone else needs their car checked because i think u get like 15 reports for so much $$. thats how i got mine checked.
