Repairations
The original Right to Repair Act, S. 2617, was introduced in 2001, sponsored by the late Senator Paul Wellstone of Minnesota. Vehemently opposed by the service industry, the bill forces manufacturers to make a wide range of information available to the public, a move sure to have positive repercussions for the hobbyist 20 or 30 years down the line.
The 2003 version of the bill, S.2138, stated that vehicle owners in the United States should have the right:
To all information necessary to allow the diagnosis, service and repair of their vehicles;
To choose between original parts and aftermarket parts when repairing their motor vehicles; and
To make, or have made, repairs necessary to keep their vehicles in reasonably good and serviceable condition during the expected vehicle life.
But the bill's detractors have some powerful supporters, including Representative Joe Barton of Texas, who this spring introduced H.R. 2048, a substantially scaled-back version of the bill that completely removes key provisions of the original, such as:
Private Right of Action;
Parts Information;
Federal Trade Commission Enforcement.
The bill is currently in the Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection. The complete history of H.R. 2048 can be found at thomas.loc.gov. The original 2001 bill is at: thomas.loc.gov.

someone was/is trying to pass a bill to make it easier for the consumer to fix and repair their new or used cars by offering more information and aftermarket parts for the vehicles themself??
