AIR Removal with PICS!

It was so nice outside i figured it was time i took care of the damn AIR system on the car that drives me nuts. I hated the pump sound on start up and the popping when coming down from 4000rpm.

I didn't have much room to work as you can see.

The AIR pump is located behind the drivers side head lights. In order to get at it I had to take off the air dam and plastic shroud under the car. Once that was done i had all the room i needed. I unhooked the 2 electrical plugs and the one line that runs up to the top of the engine. Then took the 4 bolts out that held the AIR unit to the fuse box and it dropped right out.

(sorry i thought about documenting this AFTER i had pulled the unit out so all you get to see is the big open area it came from.)

Here is the the pump

As you can see, it isn't exactly small or lite.

Here is the hose that ran from the pump to the exhaust manifolds.

I unbolted the AIR pipes on both sides, and separated the drivers side from the T fitting so i could remove it.

Here is what you will need to buy to block off the holes in the manifolds.
I picked up the AIR/EGR block off plates from Speed Inc.

I reused the bolts and put the block off plates on. It would have been nice if they where thicker, but they seem to do the job.

Once i had the plates on the wireing taped up I decided it would be a good time to fire it up and see if i missed anything or if it leaked.

PRAISE THE LORD. No more damn whistle and pumping sounds on startup or idle! I let the vehicle run for a good 15 minutes to see if the block off plates stayed sealed after there was some heat to them. Everything is working and there are no service lights.

Here is everything i pulled off.

It was a hell of a lot easier then i thought it was going to be. The 98's are different then the 02's with the AIR system.
I was referencing this thread on LS1tech during my removal.

Hopefully this will help out others that are thinking of removing the AIR system.

It pumps air into your exhaust manifolds to lower the emissions. It makes an electric pump sound when you start your car up, use to bug the living hell out of me.

well, if you have emissions, will it not pass an inspection freak? Yea I notice that pump sound always thought it was my fan lol, How much does that sucker weigh, and did you notice any performance gains such as better gas milage or ect? I notice it made the engine sound beefier.

If they pop your hood and inspect you probably won't pass, tail pipe test only and i think you would be ok. I don't have to worry about that crap yet and hopefully i never do. I'm keeping the stuff just in case i need to toss is on for a day.
No hp gains or milage, just cleans up the bay and you get rid of the pump noise at idle and the popping sounds when slowing down after you give it hell.
It probably weighed 10 lbs hoses and all.

Haha. I might use this to see if I got mine. It's supposed to be gone also, but I'm not sure if the actual aparatus was taken out. I yanked the top hose off, I know that much. Good write-up, thank you.
