Need a Rear End expert

First, is my 99 Camaro SS supposed to have posi because the rear-right tire is only spinning. Second, I got too happy and slid my right side into a curb while peelin out turning left. I broke the front right rim and its also making a bad knocking noise in the back, the dealer said that it'll cost $250 to just open up the rear-end (dont want to pay that at all). The mechanic added some additve and it now only knocks when I turn after driving about 10 mins...before it knocked all the time except when turned right. Also, when I brake it stops knocking but the car shakes a lot, to the point where its not safe unless I brake when the 60 yr old guy in a volvo next to me stops. What should I do?

Sounds to me like a carrier bearing, or you just plain split open the carrier.

Now, as per the vibration when braking, you just superheated the rotors when you panic braked. Take off your rotors and take them to a shop to be turned and it should solve to the braking vibration.

You're talking alot of money to fix that rear end, so be ready.

Well I think I saw a Detroit Locker for around $600, would that be fine for the posi unit. And whats a carrier bearing, is that in the differential or the bearing for the axle?

You'd have to show me the posi you're talking about for me to know. The carrier bearing is the part that spaces the differential to the axles in the pumpkin. So to answer your question, no its not 'in' the differential, but it is in the pumpkin. In some cases, they can be used to connect driveshafts, or be at the front of the differential connecting the carrier to the driveshaft.

You're probably not going to want to get a Detroit for the street- they are a little too harsh when they engage going around corners.

The Eaton is a much better solution for the street. If your screwed up a bearing then more than likely your gears are going to be messed up too.

Like everyone has said, expect to pay some $$..

Cant he find something in a Salvage yard? I mean it wouldnt take much to swap a rear end. Shouldnt have to bleed brakes. So that leaves a few bolts.. However if he keeps driving that thing... Hes Going to need a whole new Housing anyway. Prob already does.
