EDIT: yea I would go with Acura TSX, Cobalt SS/Pontiac Pursuit, Mini Cooper S, or if you want size and Impala SS or Accord Hybrid

out of those you listed in a personal preferance i would go with the Cobalt SS (New Cavilier) or the Colorado (the new S10 platform)

get a 2005 BMW 5 series (used ) it has speed, style, and comfort.
i work at Town + Country BMW and a 2005 BMW 5 series ( used) or a 2006 BMW 3 series is a great car to get for $40 000

I drove the new mustang GT today, id go with that, its a ton of fun, im thinking about getting one of those myself. right now there are mad deals on 05's with low milage!!
