Everyone knows that smoking isn't good for you. But for three Toronto residents, it was even worse than they thought - they're under arrest for allegedly smuggling illegal cigarettes into Canada.
The total value of the haul announced by the RCMP, the Canadian Border Agency and authorities in Vancouver on Monday is estimated at a staggering $3.6 million - including at least $1.1 million in unpaid taxes. In all, cops seized some 51,600 cartons of the bogus butts.
"The distribution of contraband tobacco products has serious consequences for Canadian taxpayers," Staff Sergeant John Morton of the GTA Customs and Excise Section explains in a statement. "The loss of tax revenue negatively impacts on the both federal and provincial governments' ability to fund health care and education. And there is no impediment to younger Canadians obtaining these products."
Three men, two from Scarborough and the other from Markham, are charged with unlawful possession of tobacco products.
