Question Help with repainting part between window/door

Hi there,
I just bought a Protege that looks perfect, only the paint on the pieces between the window/door on the exterior (they're metal, and contour the bottom of the window over the steel of the door) are kind of chipped and worn for some reason. I was wondering if anyone has ever done this before? What kind of paint should I use to give the best looking finish, what grit of sandpaper and how difficult is it to remove these pieces without breaking them? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
-Curtis

To better explain the piece I'm talking about, here's a picture (not actually my car, so the damage isn't visible in this picture).

u gotta take them off and get the piece sanded.. be careful doing it because they bend really easy and once they are bent they are almost impossible to get back to a smooth shape. likely have to take off your door panel to get to the mounts. sand them really smooth and then paint with whatever colour u want them to be.

Yea, I've tried taking off the interior piece from the door but couldn't find anything holding them on the door. There were three plastic clips (with two teeth that came out of them) but I don't think they were actually holding the piece I need to paint. I tried loosening them but it didn't do much and I'm afraid to break them... I have a '95 Mazda Protege.
