Celica intake gasket

Hi,

I found out the other day that the "Check Engine" light went off on my car(Toyota Celica GT, 2001). I brought it to a garage and they suspected that there is a leak on the intake gasket but they said they could not do the check and just asked me to replace it. Is there any way to run some tests and check if there is an actual leak or not on the intake gasket before I replace it?

One technician told me that you can check it by spraying some liquid around the gasket and check if the RPM increases after that. Is this a reliable test?
