4 month / 6 month car insurance?
 

im wondering whether it's possible to get insurance coverage for like 4, 6 months or less. i know people do this with two cars, like a winter and summer car, but it is possible to do this on with one car?

From what I understand, you can take the insurance off completely/intermittently if you own the car.


If your car is financed, the bank or lessor of your vehicle will require you to keep a minimum of fire + theft on it, regardless of if it's being driven or not.




I only insure my car (fully) for six months a year, and keep Fire/theft on for storage in winters.

sweet, sounds good. i do own the car, so if i can do the 6 month thing, it'd be awsome.. do i have to get fire/theft for the remaining six months, or am i able to just get just put a total stop for the 6 months, and then pick it up again 6months later?

you can just completely stop it for 6 months.

if you had a loan you could get away with it, but thats taking a risk.

you can take the insurance off completely for those six months/7months/9months/whatever you choose, though in my experience it's easier to just keep a minimum of insurance on year round. The reason I say this is, (as I'm sure you've discovered) insurance companies [say they] give better rates for long-time customers + 'loyalty'.


That, in addition to the 'administrative' fees you get pegged with each time you start a new policy... and in some cases, financial penalties for cancelling.


but don't take this as gospel, as it's only my experience. Every broker is different and plays by different rules.


edit: depending on where you're storing your car (garage/driveway/barn/wherever) it may be a good idea to keep fire/comprehensive on it through the winter anyways. The year I switched from my original storage facility to a friends garage, the roof caved in @ the facility from the weight of the snow, and everyone who didn't have comprehensive coverage lost out. Turned out the place included a clause in their contract that said 'blah blah we have no insurance. storage is at your own risk.'

Does anyone know any companies that do this? Or any brokers you can recommend? I'm primarily looking for 2-4 month insurance for the road; its the only time i'm off school...

yea drift n shift i hear you i in same boat i have a 94 accord sittin inmy garage no insurance plus i will not be driving in the iwnter months so i lookin for only summer months n have been quoted 3-400 month 3rd part so yea its tough man

I only pay about 70 a month for full coverage on my GN, that includes collision.... and it's an additional 30 a month to add my winter beater... see all you guys have to do for cheap insurance is get old and don't hit anything...

and I am able to take coverage off my GN. but I do leave Fire and theft on it...

I'm insured with state farm right now and they're policy is every 6 months as opposed to a year. So that might be a company to try to get insured with...??
