Anyone ever got a speeding ticket when following other people?

It's pretty normal to see people going 140 km/h on the highway, especially on the left lane. I'm just wondering, if there's a cop, or speed trap or whatever, and they see an entire lane of the highway or in some cases, all the lanes of the highway going 140, do they still try and ticket a few people?

Not long ago, I was going 140 when I passed an OPP cruiser. And everyone else was going the same speed. A couple people tapped their brakes when they saw the cruiser, but pretty much everyone continued on at 140. But that cop was busy with a disabled truck. I wonder if he wasn't busy if he would've tried to pull one of us over.

Is there anyone on this site has been that one unlucky guy that the cops singled out?

If an officer were to cite you for speeding, it would probably be from "pacing" (driving along behind you for some distance), as radar can't pick a single car out of a crowd. So always watch your mirrors and look for the little antenas, dog-dish hubcaps, etc.

If you don't admit to knowing your speed at the time, it could be argued in court that you were just "matching the flow of traffic" until you could get out of that fast lane, which should be viewed by a judge as reasonable. But if you failed to notice the cop on your tail (sometimes pacing one lane over) for the last mile or two, then that defense would be shot down in flames.

???Your wacked right out man, radar CAN get a single car, but almost all police use laser now. Matching the flow of traffic NEVER got anyone out of a ticket cause they are ALL breaking the law, and saying you don't know the speed is like saying you were not paying attention to your driving, your gauge cluster is part or normal scanning when you drive as well as all your mirrors

You need to read more dude. Laser uses a light beam and only works from a stationary position. Laser is targeted by looking through a site (like looking through a gun site, so there is no doubt which car is speeding.

Radar guns send out microwave signals at a specific frequency, which bounce off moving objects and are received back to the guns antenna. The scientific principal of the doplar effect is employed to calculate the objects speed. There is no visual targeting site. The officer cannot accurately state which vehicle the received signal came from. The microwave signal is sent out in a rather wide beam, compared to a lasers more focused beam.

In order for Radar evidence to convict, it has to be shown that the radar gun was properly calibrated before and after the charge, and that the tuning fork used to check the gun was calibrated within manufacturers specifications. If running radar from a moving cruiser, speedometer calibration records from an authorized shop also have to be presented in court, when you ask for them. All of this paper work has to be in order, and present at your trial. Also, the officer has to testify that he visually identified you as speeding and the radar gun just confirmed his visual opinion. You have to ask the officer for all this stuff during cross-examination or the radar evidence will be used against you.

Show me in the traffic act where it says you have to monitor your gauges! Look, you all can take Graves words of wisdom and just pay your tickets like sheep, or you can fight every one of them and keep your insurance as low as possible.

Never admit you were speeding! It's better to state you were more attentive to the conditions around you than to your speedo.

Pay it....NO,NO,NO! You gotta fight'em all, how else is the Cop gonna get a court card. The funny thing is people take tickets personally, take them to court cause they wanna "beat" the Cop. The Cop dosen't care if he wins or loses, he always wins cause he gets paid! 3 1/2hrs time for a whole 20min in traffic court....keep fighting them....its YOUR right....

Is this a factual statement?? I'd really like to expose (on the air) this money-making scheme cops have: Write lame tickets expecting a call to court so they can earn 10x their wage, with no repercusions.

But I need facts, not just made-up stuff. A PM from a reliable source will do nicely thanks.

It's true, but you can do your bit to deprive them of this "money-making scheme".

Make complete stops at stop signs, drive within the posted speed limit, and generally drive in a reasonable manner at all times. Remember, the scheme only works with a steady supply of inept, inattentve, and scofflaw drivers ready and willing to feed the machine.
