Busted for noise

Ok well hopfully no one will complain im asking this in here, thought this would be the best place, anyways, a while ago some one I know of got in trouble because the cops said his exhaust was too loud, and he got some B.S ticket. Anyways Im planning some exhaust work for the future and was wondering how loud is too loud, whats the leagal limit. Basicly from you guys experiences what will get me pulled over. The engine is a 85 chev 305, and I plan to do true duel exhaust out the back.

Thanks

Personally, I've asked high and low from the police, MTO and MOE. There doesn't seem to be a dB level for "excessive".. it seems to be up to each officer's discretion.

If the law were to have set a definite decibel level for noise, it would open a whole can of worms... SPL meters would have to be used, which includes officer training, regular unit calibration and testing, and of course the debate over A-weighting vs. C-weighting (semantics, I know, but the law isn't anything if not specific).

Of course, this is only what I know. Perhaps gldwngr can chime in on this...

I just made my own custom silencer, keeps it loud and they cant touch me because the silencer is on.

that's why i prefer my low-pass filter to quiet it down - gives it a nice rumble but no farting.

Booked

Cops dont give a , Ive gotten 2 tickets for my exhaust, any aftermarket muffler they'll book ur ass and say its too loud even if it isnt... But I think where u live is a key factor... I live in Brampton and work in woodbridge and cops ion those 2 areas are the biggest pricks Ive experienced. its ****in BS I get pulled over all the time.. perpare for ur "unneccasry noise" ticket!! $150.00 and a big pain in the ass!!!

they can only book you for unnecessary noise after 11pm... you can be as loud as u want during the day

Don't believe it. You can be nailed for unnecessary noise under the HTA at any time of day.

In addition, you can also be ticketed for unnecessary noise under city bylaws. Depending on location in the city and the type of noise, that can happen between 11pm to 7am, or it too can happen at any time of the day.

There's nothing wrong with duals, provided you keep working catalytic converters in each side and provided that the mufflers you use silence the car to an acceptable degree. Straight-through or Hollywood-style mufflers than do not contain proper internal baffles are illegal. Mufflers that do not muffle will net you a ticket. Mufflers that "bark" under acceleration can get you a ticket if you do so and are seen by a cop.

If you have to ask if your exhaust is "too loud", it probably is. The smart money is to put on a proper exhaust, dual or otherwise makes no difference, with decent mufflers. The world doesn't need to know several blocks in advance that your car is approaching them.
