Can my new insurance Company contact my old one?
Hello, My car was stolen from me and did not get anything from insurance company because I was not covered. People are telling me to stay with my first insurance company though I did not buy a new car yet and then switch to a new company, but I want to cancel. Now if if the new insurance company asked me about the reason y I canceled with the first company, what should I say? I am afraid my premium will go up if they know I had my car stolen. If I did not tell them, will they have the right to contact my old company to find out the reason? I am really not sure!!

Some advice please thanks I'm not sure if you've found your answer for this or not yet but I will tell you that if your car is stolen that is not your fault and therefore the claim will not count agains your driving record. If you were insured with a 'direct writer' such as RBC, Belair, State Farm, AllState or those type of companies then the claim, even though there would be a zero payout may still show on your insurance history report however, it would be a not-at-fault loss with a $0 payout. As for you cancelling your policy - If you want to cancel it just cancel it. It's not a chargeable lapse. Meaning the new insurance company cannot take the lapse into consideration for rating purposes. There are chargeable lapses such as if your policy was cancelled for non-pay then that would affect your rating when you go to sign up for insurance again. Keep in mind though anytime you cancel your policy during the term there is a penalty. It's usually about a months worth of coverage. Hope this answers your question.
