Cancelling insurance on second car over winter
So here's the deal. I'm 18 and have a semi-project car (1985 Crown Victoria with a 351W) that could, unsurprisingly, use some work. It is legally my mother's car, with me as the primary drive (and her as the secondary, since I'm living with her). We have two cars on the same insurance, this one being the less valuable, less driven, less-comprehensively insured, etc. We're with RBC
At 180 dollars a month to insure, with me having just been told to not come back to work till february (seasonal job, tire shop), the though occurs to me to just take the car off the road for the winter, saving the insurance money, salt, wear and tear, gas money, etc, and putting the money saved (I do still have some income from odd jobs) towards parts so that the car is in nice shape in the spring. I've heard that cancelling insurance and then re-starting during a period that the car is still registered will result in jacked-up rates when you re-start insurance. Does anyone have any experience with this? Does this still apply when there are two cars under the same insurance? How much was the increase? I don't wanna take it off the road till april or june to save 600 or so, only to have to pay an extra 50 a month till I'm 25. Thanks in advance, John |
Just park it for a reduced rate. Dont outright cancel it.
People do it all the time. |
Check this out, I am with TD:
Winter 2008: Cancel miata insurance Spring 2009: reinstate miata April 2009 add BMW 540 May 2009 cancel miata for summer August put Miata back on September add Pathfinder October cancel 540i, fire and theft only November, activate 540i for one month, then stop December, activate Miata for 1 week, then take it off I have called insurance company so many times and they don't care. Nor do I get penalized for anything. |

Parking typically means that theft/fire coverage is still on it and it's usually pretty low, I can't remember what it was for my BMW but maybe $20 month?

allright. I guess I could add that coverage and take away the driving related ones, just to have a token piece of insurance left so it isn't cancelled.
Thanks to both of you. I'll check this out with RBC on monday. |
