Hi,

Looking for advice, maybe someone was in similar situation.

Last week I received a letter from Portugese local police. Apparently they caught me speeding on a radar camera last year during a trip.

The car was rented under my name but on the day of the offence I was not the driver. Since I was not stopped by a police and I did not see the radar photo should I pay the fine?
I don't speak Portugese and don't know anyone who is familiar with Portugese or European law.

If I don't pay will it affect my Ontario driver's license?

Ontario has reciprocal agreements with Canadian provinces and most US states. I believe they also have agreements with several countries in Europe and Asia. Call the office below and ask if there is an agreement with Portugal.

The car rental agency had to look up who rented the car with the license plate on that day and time. So expect an additional charge to your credit card for "forwarding" the driver information to the police.

Red light cameras in Ontario don't affect your driving record or demerit points. But failure to pay a fine can result in licence renewal troubles. They may deny your renewal if there is a reciprocal agreement with Portugal until you pay the fine.

And if you are ever in Portugal again and are stopped by the police, there will be an outstanding fine which they could nail you for.

Just called the Ministry of Transportation and was told that Ontario doesn't have any reciprocal agreements with Portugal at this time. I will double check and call them again talk to someone else, but it seems it is all good.
