Double whammy

My ex-wife called me and told me our son got tickets in November 2005. One was for driving in a restricted lane s.154 (diamond lane or bike lane or some crap like that) $57 + 2 points on College St. in Toronto. The other was a no stopping ticket $40. He never told us and tried paying after the 14 days expired. He got a conviction notice in Sept 2006, trial notice was Feb 2006. He tried before xmas to get a new trial but was told no because he admitted that he knew about it and did nothing. If he claimed he did not know about the trial he could have gotten a new trial.

My ex gets a renewal notice for insurance with a $400. increase, $2100 to $2500 for our son's '98 Civic 4 door. She called and asked if it had gone up because of the ticket. They said no, it was because she moved. Then they told her that she was supposed to tell them of the conviction so they could properly rate her insurance. They said it was akin to lying and that they would drop her her coverage but looked they other way and just assessed her at a new rate. It went up to $3300. because of the two points.

My son is at York and needs a car to get there. I have to pay his expenses until he leaves school.

This ticket is going to cost me $2000 extra over the next two years for two tickets that should have cost $97. :smilie_d0

What you mean is that I should have had a better divorce lawyer.

damnn, sorry to hear that. but, like flight_90 said, buses take people anywhere these days, be it go transit, ttc, yorkregion. lets say two legal passes a month, $150, times 8 months, a lot less than $3300. but, if he's at york, maybe you can get him to pay off the diff. through summer jobs or whatnot :dunno:

Insurance companies are total bullshit, thats what it comes down to.

I wish I could make him take a bus but my divorce will not allow. My ex would freak if our son had to take a bus. It would cost me more to go back to court to get things changed. 2 more years and I am free.

my bad man....and good luck with your problem

A car is arguably not an education expense that you would be on the hook for in any divorce agreement.

Neither would be any insurance hikes beyond your control that are caused by the driving behaviour of your son.

If it was me, I'd be sending him that TTC MetroPass and saying "there's your basic transportation needs covered, any extra comes out of your own pocket".
