Driving without insurance vs. No valid insurance?

Is there a difference between getting a summons for having no insurance and a ticket for failing to show a valid insurance card?

My friend got caught driving with no insurance but he had his old pink slip insurance (expired last year some time) and showed it to the cop. Cop came back and said it was expired and he told the cop some BS about how he just moved or something and the cop just gave him a ticket for not showing a valid insurance card.

Is there a difference?

Big difference. The ticket is a straight $110 fine and a summons for no insurance is a possible $5000 fine or more.

Really...

Ok cool good to know. Thanks for the fast reply.

Is it worth him fighting it or should he just pay it?

It's a non moving violation.

If he makes like 100-150 dollars per day, just pay the damn thing, it's gonna throw your whole day off, and not be worth it.

If he has the day off..why not fight it..cop probably wont show..

Show up with his insurance papers. Usually the prosecutor will drop the charges if you show up with proof of insurance. I've seen it done every time I've been to court. Kid walks up to cop, cop speaks to prosecutor, kid pulls out papers, Prosecutor withdraws charges.
