1995 GOLF GTI 8v or 16v?

My cousin just bought a 1995 golf gti and hes going crazy because he does not know weather it is an 8v engine or 16v... all I know is that its 2.0L 2 door hatchback... and ive checked the engine and it doesnt say which one it is...

Does anyone know how to find out? :dunno:

Thanks,

I believe the 2.0L was an 8v and has 115hp

Thanks,

It's a slow ABA 8v. Best bet, blow it up, and build a 16v. Or, if you're ambitious, swap the 16v head, onto the ABA bottom end, and boost the hell out of it. :smilie_da
Easy way to figure out a VW 16v, is it's got an intake that wraps around, from the back, over the top of the head, and into the front of the motor. It says 16V DOHC on it. The ABA motor has a flat intake, goes the same way, but doesn't have the 16v emblem, or individual runners.

Tell him to go with a VR6 and he'll be much happier. But if he's just wants between the 2 16v.

how much do you think it would cost to drop a vr6 into that car? would it be just as good if he put a turbo into the car?

If you're going to go through all the trouble of a VR swap, you may as well just do the 1.8t. Easier, cheaper, faster.:smilie_da

swapping a VR6 into that car is no trouble at all... actually it's easier then putting in a 1.8T. And a VR6 isn't any more then a 1.8T.

Yeah, I reread it, and realized it was a MK3. MK3 VR's are easy. :smilie_da

Both VR and 1.8T good choices

12v vr6s are prolly cheaper than the 1.8t's because there are alot more of them around, but 1.8t is bad ass
