With Volkswagen's goal of world (sales) domination well underway, it comes as no surprise that the automaker is amping up its green-car cred. While VW is heavily invested in diesel and offers the Touareg hybrid, it knows more hybrid models are necessary to go head-to-head with the competition. Exhibit A: the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid, which debuted today at 2012 Detroit auto show.

Volkswagen hopes the new Jetta will be the hybrid of choice for those looking seeking something sporty, like the Honda CR-Z, but also environmentally friendly, like the Prius.

Key to the Jetta Hybrid's sport appeal is its new (to the U.S.) 1.4-liter turbocharged I-4 engine, electric motor, and all-new seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The turbo four-banger produces 150 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, and the electric motor is good for 27 hp. Peak combined power output is 170 hp. Volkswagen says the combination will make the car the fastest compact hybrid in-class, with a 0-60-mph time estimated to be less than 9.0 seconds. For comparison's sake, in our testing the CR-Z was good for an 8.4-second 0-60 run. Sportiness? Check.
