95 Golf GTI - Is this normal?

Hey guys,

I've had a base VW Golf CL since '95 so I;m familiar with VW's I recently also bought a 95 Golf GTI (not VR6). I guess I had a thing for '95!
The CL has 280K KM's
and teh GTI has 170k KM's.

Anyways I noticed quite a big difference between the two cars. They look very much alike but the GTI is showing some weird symptons ...considering that it's a 13-year old car, and I thought I'd run it by you guys to see if these are normal things or if there is something wrong with the GTI.

1-It burns twice as much gas as the CL. I know the engine is a 2.0 but still should it be that thirsty?
2-The clutch has a very long way to travel in order to engage. With the CL I can just flick my ankle but with the GTI, I have to do aerobics!
3-Speaking of clutch, from a standing start, it's damn near impossible to put it in first. 75% of the time I have to start in 2nd gear. Normal?
4-I like how the seats in the GTI are more form fitting, however I find it very hard to find a comfortable seating position. The gearshift & radio seem further away than in the CL. Yet the steering wheel feels much closer....is that normal?

Any insights

k

your clutch problem might be just that the clutch has shifted a tiny bit and if its in the correct positoin you wont be able to stick it in first, this can only be fixed when u replace your clutch and to fix the problem a bit try double clutching or stick it in second then back in first.

I have a 94 GTI and it's amazing on gas, so its sounds like something isn't right. And there's defintely a problem with the clutch, because ya with mine you barely push it in atall. And I dunno about the seating, in mine everything seems to be properly spaced
