how is the 94-98 golf reliability?

any major issues or certain things i should look out for? I've always hear vw's are notorious for their reliability issues and electrical problems but at the sametime i often see them with well over 200k -> 300k in terms of mileage. I was planning to get a civic hatch but now i'm leaning more towards the golf, mainly gonna be used as a winter beater but still want something reasonably reliable and handle better than my family's corolla

Electrical problems are a myth. Yes they have the odd **** up but so does every other car company. 2L's are the best way to go. Reliable motors. Proper maintainance is key.
