Turbo Question

I just bought a 2002 Volkswagen GOlf GTI 337 and I want to make the turbo a bit louder. I have heard of upgrading the blow off valve, but Im still new to the scene. Does anyone have any suggestion?

raise the boost to 40psi, it'll sound SO COOL!!!!! b4 it blows

nickthespic 08-09-2006 08:30 PM

How would I do that though? Would that increase torque too?

Get A Bov

130pro5 he is just being a F***ING dick if you do what he says #1 you need a boost controller and # 2 YOU WILL BLOW YOUR MOTOR ..... go to a shop to get a aftermarket BOV....

Don't listen to anyone in this thread. Don't touch the car, do nothing to it.

Go read a book or something on engines, then go read one on forced induction. You seem like you know nothing at all about cars, so you will grenade your engine....

I don't mean to be rude, but its true.

A fancry blow off valve will not make your TURBO louder. It will make the wasted pressurized air sound annoying.

Why do you want it to be louder?

Also i was told that the VWs dont like vented Air (the BOV not going back into the intake)
So IF you do get a BOV, make sure you can run it back intot he intake (so that rules out RFL bovs, and other "horn" style bovs)
Oh and technically it would be a Diverter valve in thise case...

yea stick with a bypass valve.

Don't give advice unless you know what you're talking about. You can't use a boost controller on a 1.8T because the boost pressure is regulated by the ECU. That's why a chip upgrade on these things gain like 50hp+.

If you want the loud annoying blow off noise, install a different air filter. With a cold air intake, the stock diverter valve will sound identical to a blow off valve.

if you couldn't tell, i was being sarcastic.. AND i wrote "b4 it blows" obviously i was joking. and i don't think the bov would do .

ok, if you want to increase boost, there is two ways. 1st way, purchase split second boost controller which is specially desigined for the 1.8t motor, but when increasing boost you'll need to add a biggert turboback exhaust system and a CAI or intercooler because the gains won't be as significant. Second option, get your car chipped, there are numerous manufactures that will chip the 1.8T motor, but some are not as dependable as others. Anyways for purchasing the split second boost controller you can visit Welcome to QMR MOTORSPORTS, that's the only place I know of in the GTA that carries said boost controller. I'm gonna make it clear now that I don't know work or I'm not affiliated with QMR in any way, just letting the guy know were to get a SS boost controller. For more info on your motor, and the other options of raising boost, visit VWvortex.com, register as a user, and read up in the 1.8t tech forum. Also when you raise your boost, you'll probably cause the stock DV to fail, and you'll need to upgrade to a new one. You can buy an aftermarket one or you can even purchase one of a higher model audi, and for info on the diverter valve you can check the vortex as well.

and increasing the boost makes the turbo sound louder, does it not?

Not so much on the tiny stock turbo. The turbo itself will not really "whistle" very audibly. Especially not on the stock air filter/tubing and stock exhaust...

My recomendation is listen to B6T, get an open element intake filter and your stock bypass valve will be more than loud enough afterwards, and the turbo itself will be slightly easier to hear.

short ram air intake ( cold air works too, just not always as loud)...that will make the turbo sound a little louder
