vw suspension-help

I've got a 95 vw golf (turbo diesel/5spd). I don't like the suspension, it's like driving a sponge. Does anybody know what years/models the suspension for golfs are interchangable? (eg. will 95? GTI suspension bolt in or newer?) And will it greatly improve the handling? What can I do to improve my existing suspension? I need to do it cheap. I can do all the installations myself. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

just get a set of shocks and springs... that'll fit it up real quick...
Either way u'r going to spend about $600 to do a suspension swap, so I wouldn't even bother going with a stock setup.
