What do you think of this deal???

I was talking to my friend and mentioned that i love the vw rabbit and he talked to his dad who talked to a friend and long story short i found the rabbit i have always wanted!!!

so pretty much its a 1983 vw rabbit without a speck of rust!!!!! it has a top of the line suspension kit and he bought the fenders from the 1984 rabbit to prevent rust (after he undercoated it). the interior is perfect not evin faded and no rips or tares and i couldent beleave my eyes when i saw it. this guy was the only owner of the car and bought it off the lot in 83. he kept it well maintained and he was almost in tears when making the sale! for this guy money obviously isn't problem because if he didn't sell it he was going to donate it. he wasint going to sell it at the time but he saw how interested i was in it and what i wanted to do with it and he said he would rather me have it than some one else.

this vw is obviously a 1.8L and has about 295,000km on it but im going to replace the motor anyways its black in color and has a red'ish pin stripe. i had my dads friend check it out and he has been working on vw's for a looong time!!

please post your opinion on this deal. and i will be posting pictures as i fix this car up (mainly the motor) I will post pictures on saturday!

Id double check under the carpet for rust. Also check strut mounts, as thats a bit of a rust problem for rabbits. Mileage is just a number, so dont pay too much attention to it. If the car starts, then thats just a bonus :)

Swap in a 1.8L 16v or a 2L 16v, and your rabbit will be flying. How much does he want?

You do not want to get into swapping the quad round grill on a Rabbit. You need to replace the entire rad support, and it is spot welded in. 68 spot welds, IIRC. Done it once, and never again.
The Passat 2l 16v engine, from B3 Passat, built from 91 to 94 is a direct bolt in motor, minor wiring to do, and taked you from 90 hp and 100 ft lbs, to 130 hp and 150 ft lbs. Can be done in a couple days, as long as you grab a MK2 GTI tranny, or some other post MK1 linkage tranny. The MK1 GTI tranny will not handle that motor for long.
Congrats for finding a rust free MK1, let me know if you want to sell it, or need help with anything. MSN is the_rabbitman@hotmail.com

thanks so much for the help!!!
i might go to the scrap yard and see if they have any passat's with the engine still intact.
and thanks for the advice on the tranny.
yah im really happy with the car and cant wait to get it going all have pictures posted early this week.
Thanks.

You can pick one up cheap used, for parts running for around 1000. Last one I got I paid 400 for, running, but not safetyable. Floors were shot, 1/4's were gone, but motor was fine. Just keep checking VWVortex, and local classifieds, etc, etc. You'll find one. :smilie_da

sweet thanks for the help!!!
i found one allretty actually if i get a reply. he wants $150 and its just the engine!!!

i can wait to get the pictures posted!!!

rabbitman 06-15-2008 10:11 PM

You'll need more than the engine. You can use the Rabbits CIS system on the 2l 16v, but you'll need a Scirocco 16v intake setup, and some other parts from the Passat and Rocco to make it work. You're way better off to get an entire car, and take everything you need vs trying to pick everything up separate.
