Challenger SRT-8 with 510 HP in the works?

Mopar faithful are speculating that Chrysler’s speed freaks are working on an SRT version of the upcoming Challenger. Since an official green light has not been given for the Challenger Concept that debuted earlier this year at the Detroit auto show, this may be a case of fans attempting to will their dream into reality, but a 510-hp, 6.4L Hemi V8 does sound better than sheep jumping a fence.

Word is that Chrysler’s SRT division was going to debut a Challenger SRT-8 at the New York Auto Show, an event that did not come to pass. SEMA is being pegged as the next most likely debut venue.

With the announcement by Ford that the Mustang Shelby GT500 will produce an SAE-certified 500 horsepower, many readers have questioned how both Dodge and Chevy will respond when their pony cars debut. Will the Challenger SRT-8 materialize as an answer, and will Chevy step up with a 500-hp Camaro SS? And how would that affect the Viper and Vette?

Though the Mustang Shelby GT500’s thunder was stolen by Dodge and Chevy at the Detroit show, it’s apparent the super Stang is raising some eyebrows around the industry.

ok i no know about all domestic companies want to make the BEST pony car. only problem is that the first year production challenger, there going to be limited edition hemis. the next year will have V6, V8 all different options. bad news is that the limited edition ones will be 60-75k in price. not even close to the general markets price range. u could buy a nice vette for that. the new chevy camaro will be in the 45-55k price range. only the wealthy will be able to buy these new pony cars.

as for the mustang, ford took that car and made it affordable for the public. as u can see it was highly successful! these companies have to learn to make things affordable for the public or it wont go over well.

i prefer to see 100 challengers on the road and aftermarket parts come out liek crazy then see 2 in my life time!!!

just my 2 cents!

i see what you are saying and i do agree to a certain extent, but the thing for me is that i'd rather see only 2 in my life time rather than them being like a honda civic and being everywhere. Exclusivity i feel plays a huge part in the image of some cars. if everyone had a challenger SRT-8 then it would loose its "wow" value (for a lack of a better word) and to tell you the truth i like being "wowed" every once in a while.

ok i agree for the wow factor. but back in 1970 when these were new. they were like any other car. thats y so many still exist today. limited number challengers to me just make them valuable instead of drivable. more of them in collections when the average hot rodder. many who will be buying it see it as an investment instead of a car to drive. to me they arent car guys! just businessman!

That makes alot of sense, and i agree, but i also see it as there being different types of car guys, there are the types that love the car too much to drive it, there are the guys who wanna drive the hell out of it, there are th guys who work on their own cars and there are the guys that dont even know where the hood latch(sp) is. My point is there are many different ways of appeciating cars and if that means that half these cars will be babied and not driven, so be it.

We technically dont know what awaits for this car in the future, nothing is for certain or set in stone for now. Who knows, this car may be a disapointment like the Charger (imo) or it may blow it out of the waters and the production numbers will go up. Only time will tell i guess.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

There will only be 5000 cars made first year. All will be SRT8 automatic with the 425 hp hemi. All cars are already sold to the selected dealers and the dealers are taking cash to just put you on a list. Its not a deposit.
Second year will see other options such as 6 cylinder and the regular 5.7 hemi. Basically a regular production car. All cars will still be automatic.
Third year may see a 500 hp hemi with a 6 speed. It is in the works but not confirmed.
