Process was:
120grit to remove paint and get rid of the initial grain that is natural to this valve covers paint (similar to B series valve covers I believe)
400 grit to get rid of scuff marks from the 120
800 to smooth it out
6 thin coats (took about 3-4 coats to fully cover) with 10-15min flash time
The paint was the dupli-color engine enamel from crappy, "Universal Gold" is the color

Personally I would have sandblasted it. Since you painted it, you did not need the "mirror" finish from hand sanding as a primer/paint will generally fill in the tiny pits/scratches anyways.
