Car audio capacitor info?

Just looking for some basic info. What's it purpose? How many farads are truly necissary? What should I look for when getting one? And (Arch) what's the best price for what I'd need?

i think the purpose is to hold extra power for a sound system say if your car were to be pushing to many watts, keeps your headlights from dimming and such in power surges like bass hits and such, well that's what i thought it always was but i could be wrong

basically a cap is a fast battery, it stores power for when you need some extra oomph. Most guys need only about 1 farad they run about $100. You need a minimum of .5 farad per 500 watts, and if you have other electronics you want bigger (you can't have too big a cap)

IMO it greatly depends on how much power your amps pull and what all you have in your car. Alot of times a cap is just a bandaid, a better battery and doing the big 3 upgrade eliminate most dimming problems

69Z28 for example has 70X4rms for his speakers and 1200rms for his subs, at idle with headlights on he gets minimal dimming with a big 3 upgrade which we just havent gotten around to doing it would basically disapear.

I would put the system in first and go from there

I prefer to use a cap on any install with a sub system (mostly because competition rules knock points off for not having one)

id be a better investment to upgrade battery, alternator, an wiring like the big 3 then to add a cap. but honestly u dont really need to do any of that unless ur amps are using more then 1000 watts... ive been running 1200watts(its an underrated amp so prolly more like 1400) an the most i get is slight dimming of car lights an thats only when i have the heater on an the subs running at full tilt.

pentavolvo im just wondering would u happen to be running eD gear?

ahh *** nvm....I meant to say its like a power converter...like the wall plugs power in to the power supply to get like 500 watts out of it...guess it was the wrong kind of comparison...I will quit talking now...:banghead:
