and the right stuff
engine: get some engine spray from canadian tire, use a low pressure stream to rinse out the surface stuff, spray the engine with the spray, let it sit in, you might consider using a soft brush to brush the heavily soiled areas, then spray light mist of water again (if you have a cone air, please for the love of god, wrap it with a bag!), you can also use something to wrap the electronic connections... remove bag, remove anything you got wrapped around the wiring, start the car and let it sit idle for a minute, a good spray of air from a compressor would get most of the air out, the engine heat would get rid of the rest... turn the engine off and apply rubber and plastic dressing, you can also wax the engine if you are really wanting show quality shine
as for your paint work, buffer works, i do it by hand though, work with a system, maguire or mothers in canadian tire both have their own 1-2-3 system to restore paint, worth a look, then use a good high quality wax like maguire's NXT or Mother's pure canuba.... ur car will look new, believe me!

Most engines from 1995 on are safe with a bit of water in it.
The most important part in engine detailing is having an engine that is WARM.
Process:
-Start engine for a few minutes to warm up. (You can detail with the engine running in some cases where all the important stuff is covered. If you doubt yourself, it would be best not to do so)
-Spray your degrease liberally and agitate.
-Powerwash (I use 1500psi @10 inches away) or from hose.
-Close hood
-Come back at the end of detail, wipe up pools of water, and dress.
When it comes to car detailing, you get what you pay for. The cheaper guys will cut corners, slack on the type of products, leave holograms (if a rotary is used), and generally, the cheap guys are focused on volume, not quality.
Check out any 'high' quality detailer, by themselves, they'll do 1-2 cars per day at the most.
Good luck!
One more thing:
The products that you generally see at Canadian Tire are aimed at a specific market: the general public.
What does that mean? Those products are formulated to be easy to apply, and give 'optimum' results. This often equates to products that are 'dumbified' if you will, and being 'user-friendly', the quality is usually sacrificed.(Durability, ultimate shine)
Furthermore, for the price you pay with 'most' of the products, you WILL be able to find products online, that are of boutique quality, and be a much better product in the end. Heck, at Carquest, you can find a line by the name of Duragloss, and Collinite that rival the results of products twice their price, but they're availability is somewhat of hit-or-miss.
Meguiars NXT line is probably the best wax you can find at Canadian Tire. Stoners Invisible glass is the best window cleaner, bar-none. (available @ Costco for the best value)
Good luck if you choose to do this yourself!
PS. If you haven't gotten it yet, I'm trying to persuade you from bringing it to a half-assed detailer. Do it yourself the right way, or pay up for someone to do it for you!!!
