alarm memory?

well ive had my car apart for quite some time (batt. unhooked and other stuff ect.) for my head project. i now have the car back together but i noticed that when i now lock my doors the horn dosent beep and the lgihts dont flash. if i remember correctly before when i unlocked it would flash and when i locked it would flash and beep. now all it does is lock and unlock ( interiors still light up ) the remote isnt very old and works great it unlocks, locks, opens hatch, and the panic works ( beeps and flashes ) so how can panic work and not lock/unlock?

probably defaulted to factory settings, check your owners manual it has th step by step instructions to get what your after. The beep should be if you hit the button twice (that actually arms the alarm once was only lock) could also be the module is bad. If the one in the GP is good, and I can make the locks work without it I'd be happy to get rid of it since the factory alarm is almost like the door locks on a soft top jeep (the ones that had zipper windows)

You're most certainly right about defaulting the factory settings, but actually it only takes one press of the button to arm the Theft Deterrent System or (Factory alarm). The only reason for pressing a button twice on the remote, is pressing the unlock button twice to unlock the passengers door. All arming modes for the factory alarm require only one press of the lock button on the remote.

I'm not in any way trying to to prove you wrong here Arch #1, I was just confused after reading the post, so I read the Owners Manual to double check. I have a 96 as well, so it should be the same as mine.

It sounds like your alarm system is in Mode 1, which simply means that it's in the Off Mode. (Doors lock, but no horn beeps or lights flashing) The factory alarm setting for our cars is Mode 3.

If you have an Owners Manual for your car, go to page 2-17 which is: "Feature Customization" and follow steps 1 thru 5. Then turn to page 2-20 and follow steps 1 thru 3. Make sure you remove your radio fuse before starting this procedure or it won't work.

If by chance you don't have a factory manual, let me know and I post the steps for you.

It couldn't hurt to try, although if it's strong enough to lock and unlock the doors, pop the hatch, and set off the panic alarm, I wouldn't think it's a low battery. When you were programming it and going through the modes, did you have the Radio Fuse pulled out of the Fusebox? That's required in order to program it.

I don't know if anyone here has a PM link or an email for Scott Settlemire, but he would be the one to try and get a hold of. Otherwise I'd say call the dealership on Monday.

Have you tried to check and see if the alarm is working, even though the lights and horn aren't? Try locking it or setting the alarm, and then shake the car or open the door to see if it's actually working. When you lock the doors, does the LED on the dash blink?

Nope.......I just pulled my LED out the other day to see what type of bulb it was, and while it was out, (I had to go to the store) I pressed the lock button on my remote, the lights flashed and the horn/siren sounded.

I was hopeing to be able to change the red LED to one of those High-Intensity Blue bulbs they have at Radio Shack, but it doesn't have the right kind of connector to accomodate the H.I. bulbs.

I'm kind of stumped my friend. I wish I had the answer for you. I'll check around for ya and see if anyone knows what else it might be.

all teh gm vehicles I have ever had you had to lock them twice to arm, unless passive arming was enabled

Hmmm.......I wouldn't have any idea. This is the only car I've ever owned that's been new enough to have a factory alarm.
Aside from this one, the 91 RS I recently had was the newest thing I ever owned, but it didn't have one. (Only an aftermarket alarm)

So when it comes to alarm systems, I don't have a clue really,......except for what I learned with this one. I really don't know what other advice I can give him at this point. Appearently he tried to reprogram the settings, but it still didn't work.

I guess I'd probably either install an aftermarket alarm, or take it to the dealership myself. And, for what it might cost at the dealership, I'd definitely just go with a new aftermarket one myself. I didn't feel secure enough with just the factory set-up, so had a Viper system hooked up as well, along with a battery kill back-up hidden under the car.

yeah i kno mine worked with the led out since summer but i think with the led out and batt unhooked for several months it may have reset the bcm, i dont kno what it could be i mean if panic works i kno the light and horn are working so it can be a wire or relay maybe the remote is sending the wrong signal, could the bcm be bad?

just remeber factory alarms are barely better than no alarm (disconnect the horn and noone knows I'm breaking into your car other than lights flashing, and I can play that off if anyone does look)

well i was skiming through the service manual at school and it said under one of the conditions: led doesn't light, horns dont work and light dont flash when system is armed and unarmed, also bcm wont program - led isnt getting power from bcm plug in led and unhooke bat then hook bat back up so i think you have to have the led plugged in to make it work, i kno it will work without it after but i think since the batt was unhooked for so long the bcm was reset and u most have led to program then u can take it out

That certainly sounds like the correct trouble shooting for your particular problem. Now you'll just have to get another LED and try to re-program it. Sure would be nice if that's all it takes!
