A/C Compressor Replacement

A/C Compressor Replacement
My A/C stopped blowing cold air, so I went to get it recharged. Turns out there was plenty of refrigerant.
The shop said there is a problem with the low side pressure (it is equal to the high side pressure, 200psi). They said the problem is either restriction in the orifice tube or a bad compressor. Then they said if there is restriction in the orifice tube, it is because of a faulty compressor. They recommended a replacement of the compressor, which they estimate to cost $1000-1100. :banghead:
That just seems somewhat dramatic and costly. We bought the car about a month or two ago from a private party. It seems way too coincidental for such problems to arise now (considering it is a '97, there was plenty of time for these problems to occur before).
But it is a problem nonetheless, so is a compressor replacement really necessary, expecially at that cost? Or would simply replacing the orifice tube be enough (if restriction is the problem)?

compressor sounds right, cost is a bit high if full, but the filter drier has to be replaced, refrigerant evacuated, a full system check done, orifice tube replaced (safey concern)reman compressor runs around $400 (at advance)so if they are using a new one price isn't that far off, but still a little high (list is $1000 for the compressor)I always like when people lose a/c and think a recharge fixes it though, if it needs a charge it's broken refrigerant is not used up it's a sealed system, and if needs filled it means there is a problem. It going out now is probably just a coincedenc

arch your right i just had ac class its a sealed system and if the compressors gonna be replaced the condensor has to or it will void all warrentys... it could be a cloged orfice tube..alot of what u pay for is the evacuation, recharge b/c them machines are expensive. they'll also perform a stop leak test b/c if thats in the system the whole thing has to be replaced...

Y'got windows? Use 'em!
I'll look into getting a refurbished one and getting another mechanic to do the work. I'd rather have no A/C than pay $1000 (or more).
