Car go boom
Just like the title says.
While tuning the car, doing some highway runs, everything seemed to be going okay. No knock retard, no funny noises.
Slowed down onto the side of the road, when I hear this hideous noise like metal on metal contact. Ohhhhh shhiiiiiiit.
I pull over and pop the hood. Coming from the engine. Great. Fabulous.
I limp the car home doing 10 MPH. Every time the car sees any sort of additional load, from either a slight grade in the pavement, or any sort of fluctuation of the throttle on my part, the knock retard shoots up, anywhere from 5 degrees to TWENTY DEGREES OF KNOCK RETARD. Yikes!
I am about a block away from my house when the knock retard shoots up again and... silence. The engine turns off. Another 'ohhhhhh shiiiiiit' echos through my head. I think I just broke a connecting rod.
I begin pushing my car back to my house. A guy, about in his mid-thirties, pulls up beside me in his 91 Mercury Cougar with 5.0 badging all over it, obviously stolen from a couple Mustangs. "I'm a Ford fan, so I can't say I'm sorry to see that. Hahahaha." and drives away. I sell Fords, you ***-clown. I can't wait to find that guy again, so I can beat the living **** out of him for having no decency for his fellow man.
I get my car home, and try again to start it. No go. Definitely a rod. I leave the car on the road, and begin surveying my options:
1. V8 Swap
- Verdict: No, when you consider that I just had my transmission rebuilt to handle over 650 ft-lbs of torque, and then consider that an LT/LS series engine won't bolt up to that transmission, no f'in way.
2. OEM Replacement 3800
- Verdict: A nice thought, but there are better alternatives.
3. Stupid-crazy 3800 Build-up
- Verdict: An alternative like this, perhaps.
The engine has been pulled, and is being sent to my engine builder on Monday. Ford is doing the R&R on the engine (so I get cheap shop rates).
So far, these are the plans for the new engine (with more to come):
ZZP Comp. Cams GT1 Camshaft
Ported/Polished stock heads, new valves
Comp. Cams 105# springs
36# Injectors
And right now I'm doing some additional research on upgrading that bottom end I killed.
I'll keep you all posted.

You can't blame that guy in ANY case. With all the sick people around today, you are just as likely to get shot in the face as to actually being able to help the guy on the side of the road. Doesn't matter what area you are in. Depends on that persons morning, and if he got his donut in a timely fashion with his espresso. I usually punch it when I see someone on the side of the road. Not long ago in the paper, some guy got raped and shot by 3 men on the side of the highway and all he was doing, said he wife, was pulling over to help them out.
