engine swap vs. cali smog

now i had an epiphany today. my car is gorgeous. no, thats not the epiphany, i already knew that the epiphany was that instead of selling my gorgeous car for a six-speed LT1 i should have fun and swap it!

thing is, in cali a car isnt street legal if it has an engine in it that pollutes more than the one that came in it, in other words...a camaro that came with a 3.4 wont be street legal with a 5.7. does anyone know what im supposed to do? i wont cheat the insurance company so getting a new VIN wont be a problem. will that work?

i found this with a google search:

In California, the law says that an engine must be of the same year or newer as the car and be California emissions-legal. To avoid any hassles, it should also be of the same engine type that was originally available from the factory in that particular body style.
so this means that since the LT1 was available during 95 the engine simply has to be a 95 and it will work...right?

that is exactly right just make sure and install all of teh emissions equipment, may be worth talking to a testing station see if they compare vins too be a ***** if it fails because the tech was too lazy or stupid to know the engine was available because the vin says v6

at the time of my senior project when i was unemployed...now i have a job that makes me good money. if i can save some money for a salvage V8 and get a beater it might actually be worth it...but after looking into all thats required i might change my mind and simply trade this 6 in for a different car...i dont know i just want to consider my options and after my head/cam swap i realize an engine swap isnt that hard...

it's easy and rewarding any idiot can plunk down cash for a car, but you need some skill to swap engines

if you are wanting to swap for the challenege and learning experience then is say go for it, but i'd much rather just trade it in on an LT1 T/A or Camaro considering how cheap they are now anyways.

yeah i got under my car yesterday and took a good look at it...if i swap its going to be a lot of work, and a major thing. i'd also have to buy a beater. it would be very expensive so getting a new car might be smarter...
