a few problem

i have a few problems with my 86 trans am. the problems are:

1 - :banghead: the car was not starting (it was making a grinding sign) so i am in the process of replacing the starter, but dont think that is going to help. when i put the new starter in the car and i still makes the noise (because i think it will) what is the problem

2 - :banghead: :banghead: i changed the plugs in the car today, and they smelled like raw fuel. i mean bad. i thought that i had a fuel problem because the car is using a lot of gas. what could the problem be, injectors? i dont think it is the fuel pump because it is using a lot of fuel nor do i think it is the fuel filter. what could that be.

3 - :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: i car acts up alot. when you start it, it will sometimes stall right after you start it. sometimes it runs fine til you start driving in then it stalls. but when the car is fully warm it will not do it, well it will do it sometimes when you are driving. but the trans also drops back into nuetral everytime you let off of the gas.

well i will stop with 3 problems for know.

the motor is a 305 tpi with a 700r4 transmission.

thank you for your help,

justin

fuel filter can be the cause of it stalling, but the grinding noise is probably not enough power in the battery. Try to jump start it or charge the battery. That happened to me before and it was just the battery. If it's not the fuel filter put some injector cleaner in your gas tank and if it starts let it run for a while, or at least long enough for the injectors to get cleaned

grinding may just be a shim issue (starters need shimming sometimes to get the right tooth engagement) the fuel smell could be a few things: a leaking injector, an ecm issue where it is dumping gas. Stalling could be the too rich condition. Were all the plugs smelling or just one? if all then you have an issue with the car dumping fuel (all teh injectors wouldn't leak I don't think unless the car has sat for a while)Do you have a cold t stat? that will cause the ecm to dump more gas since it stays in cold start mode

I have had some similiar issues before. Everytime i started my 3rd gen it would die immediatly. You might need a new Mass Air-flow sensor or maybe even try to replace something cheaper, such as the Mass-air flow sensor relay, and the fuel relay. Another problem i noticed with mine is the Idle Air Control Sensor was completely locked up, which was causing some surging issues and sometimes killing the car. Just my 2cents.

Could be a shim issue like arch suggested, then again your flexplate could be loose. Check ur clearances and check the flexplate for wobble.
