Finally settled on a decision performance wise.

I was kinda pissed since I was not able to get a cosign for a TA. Me and my parents have never gotten along when it comes to performance until today. We finally agreed on something, I'm looking for an striped LT1, either out of a wrecked car or really I just need the block and then build it up. Once I'm done beefing up the engine (should take over a year) I'll just drop it in (along with a beefed up tranny and Moser 12bolt). Just the fact I can start from scratch is great, their are so many choices when it comes to your own build. As an end result I'm shooting for a bored/stroked 396 with a wiff of nitrous. I'm still going for mild bolt ons on my stock engine but all the mods will be transferible to the rebuilt engine. Now where can I find scraped LT1 at a good price?

You think mileage would make a difference? I'm guesing no since it will be a rebuild.

not too much low millage would need less machine work and could save a few bucks there, but you'll spend it up front

the 396 kit was custom from I think arizona speed and marine and they had to do a bunch of machine work

Do you know how much work is required for a 383. I want a 396 but if their is a massive price differnece from the 383 I might be better off going with the 383.

depends if it's a custom crank or not, you may need machining

FORCE_FED_Z 02-11-2005 08:48 PM

stock block bored .030 over = 355

stock block with 400 crank = 377

bored .030 with 400 crank = 383

bored .040 with 400 crank = 385

bored .100 with 400 crank = 396

IMO you would be best with goin with a 383 first, esp since you said you were goin to be playin with the spray a little. That way should something go wrong you have more opportunity to bore again- and not be stuck with a big paperweight. The walls get pretty thin once you get up around 400 cubes...

archemedes 02-11-2005 11:13 PM

I didn't know the lt1 could be bored that far with no filler

FORCE_FED_Z 02-12-2005 01:06 AM

TPiS has bored them out to 409 actually- But I personally don't like tin foil cyl walls...

RFF 02-12-2005 12:50 PM

Friend of mine knows someone that is selling a LT1 short block for $250 (that is just the block right). I have been calling around but I'm having hard time finding someone to do the machine work. Anyone have an idea of how much a .030 bore would cost me? If I cannot find a decent shop to do the work I might just be stuck with a 377.

FORCE_FED_Z 02-12-2005 04:16 PM

Shop here charges around $50 a hole to bore- so multiply 8 X $50 and get $400.

But that is around here- not sure what other places do...

archemedes 02-12-2005 05:24 PM

similar in MI not sure around here

RFF 02-12-2005 10:29 PM

Cool, I expected the prices to be higher but that is not bad.

RFF 02-14-2005 06:25 PM

How would I transport an engine? Buddy of mine has a full size truck and I can get an engine stand for around $37, so would I just put the engine on the stand and then use some ramps to get it in the bed of the truck? Then I would ramp it back down off the truck, sounds good? Suck not having and engine lift.
