i am seriously considereing installing an oil pressure gauge and a water temperature gauge for my Z. Can you guys give me any info or tips?

Do i get mechanical or electric gauges?
Install.......How?
Gauge pod....is there a pillar made specifically for a 4th gen camaro? how about any other types of mounts?

Well to be truthful, I dont trust the stock gauges. I also want a specific readout so I can actually see what the pressure is at and what the water temp actually is instead of "in the middle" and "not in the red"

I would do electric and get autometer, or stewert warner electrical now are as accurate as mechanical and then you don't ahve to plumb oil into your cockpit

Also autometer sell's pillar pods. You can get them that attach onto the stock piller that in my opinon look stupid or you can get full pillar replacements. Not sure you saw the triple gauge pod in my brother's Eclipse GSX or not.

yeah go with autometer and also go with electric, u might have to get an adpated in order for the oil sender unit to connect to your car as for the temp i dont kno how that works

I got the three pillar pod for my 99 when I put in my sc. The one I bought is for cars with t-tops. About $100 I think. I havent seen one for cars w/o them. They have two gauge pods too. I like the fact they are right where you can see them. With my 6 and an sc, if something goes wrong, F/P A/F too lean, I can shut her down before BOOM. I can keep track of my belt tightness with the boost gauge too. If I run less then 4 on a good jump, it's loose.

So what all is involved with wiring up a water temp gauge and an oil pressure gauge? By the way, both gauges I am looking at are electrical, short sweep

Well, alot depends on the year of your car. You may freak out your computer if you unplug the factory senders, and plug the new gauges to them. On my old 92 Camaro for instance, if you disconnect the oil sender, the car won't start. It's designed not to run, if the computer thinks it has no oil pressure. So they will have to remain plugged in. You would have to tap the sender wire on each to send the signal to the appropriate gauge. I was assuming you were going to unplug the factory, and plug in the new gauges. Another way is to put a tee in each location, on one t fitting put the factory sender, and the other, another sender for your new gauge. Use teflon tape on the threads. Both factoy and aftermarket gauges will be working then. They also make a male fitting, which would screw into the sender location, has a fitting on the top and one on the side, for clearance issues. Both gauges will have to be hooked to a proper ground, and +12V for the gauge and +12V for the backlighting. Use the dimmer circuit for the lights in them. You'll want the +12V for the gauges hooked to a keyed circuit, so they get power only when the key is on. Hope that helps.

With a electrical guage there will be no T's, teflon, or any fittings. All he will have to do is tap into the oil pressure sending unit, and the water temp sensor. And then of course the 12v+, ground and dimmer wire.

I purchased my triple-gauge pillar replacement from ThunderRacing.com. It fits T-tops cars, and if you don't have T-tops, you can probably modify it to work anyway.

Wiring them is easy too, just hook 'em up to the dimmer switch for the backlighting.

If you read the thread I wrote "tap the wires" OR do it the other way
And yes, when you disconnect the sensors and use new wires the computer DOES f-up.
