sounds like your thermostat If it is stuck closed. Its cheap and easy to replace, Get the superstat thermostat if you do. That one locks in the open position when It blows. Do that first and then If it doesnt solve your problem then your water pump is the next thing to check. But since you said it was overheating at idle it might be your water pump. Id check the thermostat first. You could check them by putting it in boiling water to see if it will open but They are cheap to just replace.

If it sounds like its ****** up it most likely is that, But Its allways good to check the thermostat first to make sure its not that until you geting into taking the water pump off wich is a pain in the ***. I might sound retarted but Make your your belt is on there. Yes its dumb but that could do it too.

if youre water pump is going, there will most likely be antifreeze somewhere. When they start to go, theres a little hole that they leak out of, and thats your signal.
Start with the fluid level.. Maybe youre just really low on fluid, which could be related to the following probelms. Check your thermostat first, they are cheap and simple. If that doesnt fix it, move on to other things. Either your water pump, or the little elbow behind it. Mine went last year, and they arent that hard to change. You have to take out the alt, a couple hoses, and its like right there, 8 - 10 bolts. Took me like an hour or so total, and thats taking my time, but I changed the upper and lower rad hoses too.
If you get a rebuilt water pump, theyre even cheaper. I spent like $80 on the entire change, including 2 gallons of antifreeze, the pump, and the little elbow things. I honestly wouldnt be running your car if its getting that hot.
