Waxing is an art that gets better the more comfortable with the car you get. circles is horrible, that's what creates the circular swirl marks. You want to do back and forth motions, that way the swirl marks are all atleast in a line, and when you polish it'll be easier to get rid of.

that's why you do circles in different directions, and overlap, back and forth and you'll get scratches that show from teh side, or worse you see tehm when driving

True, that's why the random orbital buffers are so popular, they supposedly never do the same circle over and over again. But, a normal person isn't going to have such luck doing the work that a porter cable does, and since you're going to have scratches no matter what, in my opinion the real thing to do is not worry too much about which way you wax, as long as you prep with a good polishing. Even washing the car you're going to streak it, it's impossible to do anything to the surface of your car without getting fine scratches and swirl marks in the paint.
