Actually, don't the 4th gens have a really bad 1st to 4th skip shift problem? I manually shift my automatic because it actually gives me a lot better gas mileage. Driving all the time in overdrive, regardless of what statistics show, is worse on my gas mileage than shifting manually from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to drive, and drive to overdrive. And I have about two or three months worth of gas receipts with the mileage on it. :p Everytime I go to get gas I reset the trip counter, normally (my normally being manually shifting) I get somewhere between 210 to 230 miles per 10.5 to 11 gallons of gas... about 19+ MPG compared to the 16-17 or so I get from driving in overdrive.

19 mpg is what you should get with normal, but 10 gallons is not going to give you an idea of milage

meissen 07-08-2005 12:20 PM

That's how much I fill in my tank every week.

archemedes 07-08-2005 01:07 PM

if you get better milage by shifting your torque converter clutch is probably bad

If your going to get to shift on an auto at least get a shift Kit, I know a thats not what a shift kits for but its better. Take my word for it shifting on an auto hurts your tranny. My tranny on my 6 was on the edge because I had the habbit of shifting. Soon your car will have a horrible rattle then soon it will need a rebuild.

i do the same thing, i dont have results to prove it, but if i let the trans shift it shifts too fast, then i have to give it more gas to get going than if i had just shifted by hand, just in the neighborhood im in third gear before i hit 25 if i let it shift by itself.

you need trans work, the servo is bad, also define too early, it may be where it should shift

I get 19+ from letting it stay in overdrive and shift all by itself. Your gas mileage sux.

Prior to tuning my car last year, I'd get about 13-14 MPG in the city with my car. This is with a modified 3.8L. After tuning, I got about 18 MPG.

With the new engine untuned, I'm getting about 16-17 MPG. Comprehensive tuning should yield 18-20 MPG (produces more low end torque than previous, so engine doesn't have to rev as high and work as hard to move the car).

archemedes 10-18-2005 09:03 PM

even the pros miss shifts from time to time

tynyrhyno 12-29-2005 02:05 PM

it's not really that bad for the trans,(unless you hold it too long) it just does zero for performance

I sometimes manually shift my auto. If im on a highway i like to keep it in 3rd cause the RPMs are higher and i can get around people quicker ;) Same as for 2nd the cars RPMs are high thus letting it accel much quicker and easier then having it in overdrive. But not it doesnt help u performance wise u can just get the RPMS higher up.
