LT1 Issues and Questions

Couple of questions, they may be stupid, but I would really like to know. First of all, I have an oil leak coming from the rear main and Chevy wants damn near a grand to fix it, yet, several other shops quoted about 350. Why is there so much of a price difference? I know Chevy quotes out of Chiltons, but damn!! Do you think I should go with Chevy or do you think the other shops are quoting me lower just to get me in there (then jack up the price once the works done)? I'm temporarily in Wyoming for the next two months (then I get to go home to Cali), otherwise I wouldnt have any trouble because I would know of a good shop to take it to. Another thing is, no one plugs in their cars here, but I was told that if I didnt have a certain kind of oil it would freeze, although it hasn't yet. Is there a special wieght I should put in it? I hate cold weather, and so does my car :banghead:

run 10w30, and unless it's 30 below your fine, most of the cars that are plugged in are probably diesel. The other shops will find something else I almost guarantee it, also are you sure it's rear main, and not intake? The job used to pay 4 hours so labor on just the rear seal is about $350, find out what the dealer was quoting (all shops use the same guide to quote work) dealer may be more on parts, but should be the same on labor

It is the rear main, when I had the oil changed I had the guy check and he showed me where it was coming from and it is the rear main.

NM, I just saw your other thread. I will make a couple calls and see what I can come up with. If you are really worried about the local shops and are willing to drive a little, I could reccomend a few good shops where I am( just south of Cheyenne)

I will still make a couple calls once my wife wakes up. Don't want to wake her up before shes ready to get up. You know, the whole.... When mamas happy, everyones happy deal, lol.

OK, I called a couple guys and no one seems to know of anyone good in Rawlins. Not that there isnt anyone there, just they dont know anyone. The closest one that any of the guys I called would recommend is in Saratoga( a little southeast of you)

Let me know what your plans are and I'll get back to you with some places if you want.

Sorry it took awhile for me to get back to you. The guy I was talking to about the shop in Saratoga went out of cell range until this morning. He said its a garage called Steves Garage and it is just a little south Saratoga on Hwy 130. You guessed it, the guy you need to talk to is Steve, lol. He is also a mechanic and said he would guess a rear main seal to run you $1200 to $1300, so the dealer doesn't sound that far off.

How much does the seal run just itself (no shop rate).
