need some opinions...

ok ive been checkin out TPIs all over and im not too serious yet,(like i thought i was) but im thnking about once i sell my car. You guys think i should go for a 305 TPI with a 5 speed, or a 350 TPI with a 700r4. Now i would love to have the torque difference from the 305 to the 350, but it would be an auto, on the other hand the 305 TPIs can be built up pretty good and i love driving stick. so what you guys think. 305 stick, or 350 auto. i will continue looking for both but just wanted to get soem opinions on this. thanks

imported_Kyle 12-08-2004 12:13 AM

Personally i like my 350 auto. But if you like a stick that much and want a 350 stick go try to find you one. But all i have to say is "good luck". If you find a 350 stick let me know. I would like to check it out, just because i have never seen a 350 stick before. They are very rare. :P

Mike Jones 12-08-2004 12:33 AM

I would personally get the 305 with the 5 speed. I absolutly hate automatics!! My mom's minivan is an auto and that's where they should stay.

69z-28 12-08-2004 08:16 AM

lol.chad what about in race cars?lol they have big *** stalls and crazy shift kits with manual valve bodies and all that.ne ways kyle, i did in fact find a 350 stick in a nice lookin 86 camaro on thirdgen.org here it is...
http://thirdgen.org/classifieds/viewad.tgo?adid=55779
only thing is idk if its TPI becuase its 86 and they only made 50, 86' 350 TPI cars. Its a good price tho just kinda far from me but it looks like a pretty good deal. should prolly call or email and ask about it.

I don't care about having a big stall, I want to be able do decide when the gears shift on my own and not have the car choose for me.
That car you just posted is a 350 with a five speed manual so get that!

69z-28 12-08-2004 02:42 PM

yea but it might be a 350 h.o. with a 4 barrel. thats not what i want.

Camarocam 12-08-2004 04:59 PM

I would go with a manual 305 casue I have a auto and it is ok but I would much rather have a 5 or 6 speed in it.

69z-28 12-08-2004 05:01 PM

yea im ok with the 305 but i really want a 350(who doesnt lol) but either way i think i need a stick.lol im gonna keep waiting till i find an AWESOME 305 or until i find a 350 stick which will be like finding a needle in a haystack but hey its been done prolly. gotta sell my car first tho.

Get a fourth gen, 350 and six speed.

69z-28 12-08-2004 05:33 PM

yea i thought about it but theres too many of them and a little too much money for me. theres a lot of irocs but i would take a nice iroc over a 4th z-28. just my personal preference, i guess im just a third gen guy(kid)lol

imported_Kyle 12-08-2004 06:39 PM

A lot of IROC's? Well i would say around here i am the ONLY 350 IROC that is still original. Every single IROC or RS i have seen around here that is close to the same year as mine is either a RS V6 or a IROC 305 and has paints chips or something on it.

69z-28 12-08-2004 07:15 PM

yea i guess your right but i go to a lot of car shows so theres people that coem from idk say 25 miles witch is a pretty good distance for people to come to a small car show. also i was kinda reffering to the amount of irocs i see for sale. o yea j/w kyle but you ever run your car at the 1/4 mile or ne thing like that? u got ne numbers?

imported_Kyle 12-08-2004 07:22 PM

No. I have not ran my car at the track yet for a time slip. As soon as the track reopens after winter i will have a time slip up. I am guessing it can run atleast mid 13's or low 14's. I am not exactly positive though. I am also thinking of getting it dyno'ed at a shop around here that my dad knows the owner, and we might be able to get it dyno'ed for free. :)

69z-28 12-08-2004 07:40 PM

nice. you should get some suspension mods that would easily bring you into 13s if you arent there already.

archemedes 12-09-2004 12:16 AM

I would never have a stick in a car I was going to race, unless you like losing, less consistant, and can't take as much power as a good auto

JesasaurusRex 12-09-2004 02:06 AM

Oh ya guys for all of you who did not know already. There is NOT a single third gen car (1982-1992) that came stock with a 350ci engine and a manual transmission. NOT ONE. So you better make sure the guy dropped it in and has reciepts and crap. So its not a rare option IT DID NOT EXIST. Yes mine has a 350 (well more like 175 cuz i blew the bottom end :D ) and a manual tranny thats only cuz mines modded to ****. Stock there IS NOT ONE. So be careful my friend.

69z-28 12-09-2004 08:19 AM

Jes, i know that so thats why its gonna be hard.lol but either way i want a stick. and yea arch i know that casue my dad always tells me that.lol but a stick is more fun. ive been finding a few 350's with sticks only bad thing is tey are mostly far from me. but ill just keep lookin

k kool just wanted to be sure cuz there are a lot of people who think they came factory like that. Just dont want somebody getting over on you. Like that bastard is doing to me on ebay :banghead:

69z-28 12-09-2004 06:01 PM

o yea, thats why when i saw that one red z-28 it said 5 speed 350 so i immediatly looked at it and i ran the 8th digit of vin for the engine code and it was supposed to be a 305, the guy still told me it was a 350 then my dad looked at it by himself and the guy knew my dad knew a lot about cars and stuff and hes like um do u know if this is really a 350, and my dad didnt know cause he knows nothign except 72 and earlier, but since i told my dad that it was prolly a 305 hes like no i dont think it is and the guys like o ok. what a ****. thinks jsut cause im a kid he can screw me. w/e im gonna keep an eye out tho. hopeing to sell my car soon then i can hopefully get a nice iroc.thanks for the help and comments

94claudia2 12-09-2004 06:59 PM

ok the likely hood of you finding a 350 manual in a thirdgen is very unlikely "unless aftermarket" because of the fact GM was scared of twisting chassis but i would say get a 3rd gen with a 350TPI look for one with a blown or taken out tranny buy the 800 dollar kit i've seen around for a manual conversion and convert it heck you can get a t 5-6 in it and that would be bad a##

afraid of twisting? um a manual won't cause any more twisting than an auto, the real reason was the manuals at the time had problems with longevity, and few people wanted them in the first place (the z28 was designed as a more up scale performance car)

69z-28 12-09-2004 09:11 PM

well my dad has a spare m-21 in the garage out of like a 69 442. thatd be ghetto. a 4 speed on a thirdgen. i think id have trouble getting a hydraulic clutch and all the linkage and swing pedals and what not tho. id rather get a 305 and have a stick. you only twist the frame and drivetrain with a stick when your learning and dont know what your doing *cough me cough*lol, but hey, i learned on a 35 year old car. now im pretty good. but yea ive been seeing a few 350 sticks jsut far from me.

archemedes 12-10-2004 12:12 AM

the m21 is overrated I killed a few in a '79 firebird with a stock 455

JesasaurusRex 12-10-2004 02:02 AM

Theres no way to tell if the engine is a 305 or 350 just by looking at it. Get the casting # off the block.

69z-28 12-10-2004 08:18 AM

yea, my dad has an m-20 out of an old vette in his car, after a few burnouts from like 4 grand it started leaking. we're building a 402 for it now and when he takes otu the 327 hes gonna check the trans. and about the casting numbers, if i find a 350 5 speed, ill run the numbers on the block.

this place will be your friend

69z-28 12-11-2004 10:27 PM

ok cool dude. thanks a lot. one of my dads friends works at a machine shop and he could prolly check the numbers too but this site looks sweet.thanks!

archemedes 12-11-2004 10:37 PM

it becomes very handy at night when all the shops are closed

niceroc 12-12-2004 06:02 PM

get a 350 auto and pull the tranny and drop in a t-56
