newest crazy idea

well ive decided im going to keep my 3.8 in my car and do minor mods on the engine and serious mods on the suspension brakes etc. because im going to start the probably the biggest longest and most expensive project i have tried yet and im going to start with a bare block and build the exact engine i want down to the last detail and im going to start with an Ls1 block and take my time and do it right. I love my 3.8 its a good engine but i would just love to have an engine built my me and be just what i want, so any suggestions? lol i know it wont be a short job and will probably take me quite a while just for parts, but just thought id let people in on my master plan lol. o yea and after i finish im taking the 3.8 out and dropping my new one in.

Realize that basically anything over 400 horse and you will soon realize the weak points of everything else on your car.

If you have a V6, its not just a take out the 6, drop in the 8. Basically, I would say take the amount of money you think it will cost and double it.

For instance- most people think, Oh look- a 383 rotating assembly for under a grand, sweet. Too bad they forget there is at least another grand in block work to get it done properly. When I decided to build the 383 I knew it was going to cost some $$, so far I have almost $2000 in crank, pistons and rods alone- and its still not finished nor am I done buying parts. But, I know that by taking the time and spending a little extra money now, I won't have to worry when I put the pedal down and the boost builds up that I'm not going to shoot a rod thru the bottom end. But it sure will be nice to have my fully forged balanced and blueprinted motor under the hood..

You gotta pay to play my friend, and you're goin to have to pay a lot for what you want to do..

i know what is realisticly required so im not planning on getting it done in a good long while and thats why im building the whole thing from the bottom up and buy forged parts and the best parts for my application so i can take care of the weak points before they cause problems and like i said i was working on the suspension, gears, etc. before the engine goes in because i know things like my rear end, u joints etc. wont take a drastic increase in hp well i know this will probably be a project i end up working on for years to come. But im doing it with the v6 still in my car so that i can have time to save for the right parts and not just the cheap parts because it wont be in my dd and have to be up and running by the end of the weekend but thanks for the advice, but thanks for the advice it will help to have people who have already dont stuff like this to talk to about it

POssibly the cheapest place to get a motor would be pickin up a wrecked LS1 Z. I know it might be more than what you are looking to spend, but considering you will get- the motor, trans, k-member, wiring harness ect.. its not too bad of deal when you think about all that you are getting.

You are going to have to buy all of it eventually, at least this way you can see how it goes in and what you need to do to get it too work. Just my .02.

I know a guy from Oshkosh WI that just wrecked a 98 Z two weeks ago, cammed LS1, 6 speed.... I did all the work to the engine. Spun it out, caved in the driver side 1/4, smashed up the udner side, K member might have damage, it deployed the bags when it came to a final rest in the ditch.

If your intrested i can get you his contact info.
