Oil leak question

alright well ever since i got the car its leaks oil at a pretty constant rate.

probably after a few months of having the car we brought it to Gm to get and elctrical problem taken care of etc.

we ask them if they could take a look and see what the leak was. They said it was coming from "the rear (main ) engine oil seal, were the transmision meets the engine.

were heard main from GM and rear from the shop so.

I am taking it to the same shop were im doing my header were me and my friends are going to do it. They are in training for mechanics or whatever you would call it so the know what there doing basically i think ther capable since they do stuff liek this to there own cars and such.

Does anyone have any idea how you would change it or even what it is?
Anyone have this happening to there car?
Would i have to drop the transmission to change it.
I really dont feel like going to GM and spending 2400 $ to do it ...even the my local shop wants 7-800$

Anything to help me maybe a page on how to change it or pictures of it

PS. What does your guys Oil pressure read on the dash board on the Highway ...and idling

seems to be normal wear for f-body (before 100,000 miles) anyway i have my rear main seal replace (74000 miles) same thing constant drip and oil smell when engine is hot , work on it thru ur transmission some of them lift the engine..mine cost abt 1100 including trans tune up and replace the driveshaft..gm dealer will cost u so much ...my oil pressure was low when i have that leak but after the work is done ..running like new..
i like to do it myself but the car being that low i just let the mechanic do it ..done in 6 hrs

my car been reliable for the last 8 yrs..98 camaro..so spending 1100 on it doesnt bother me..if u have any access to any lift ..that will make things easy for u ...u got to remember u have to clear ur exhaust system or maybe remove it to access the tranny...in 98 model part of the exhaust is welded not bolt in...if u guys think u cant do it i would say research it thoroughly (manual/text book) while ur into it maybe change the driveshaft into aluminum ones..if u decide to do it urself ..ur saving some money that could go for ur future mod...oh yeah the seal or gasket itself is only 40 dollars its the labor thats expensive

Its a pretty common problem.

my oil pressure is always right around the middle marker... when Im driving its just above, when Im idling its just below.

look into getting a chiltons or haynes... its one of the best investments you can get. theyre around 15 bucks and will tell you about/how to do nearly everything.

If its a rear main or gasket I recommend you have a real shop take a look at it, Most cars of are years have this problem. Mine leaks but its never alot just a little. But I wouldnt have kids in training look at it and work on it. It can be a very expensive fix.

2Poor4Z is an unknown quantity at this point
it is probably just the oil pan gasket, but replace it all while you are in there..

it is a common problem and requires either lifting the motor, or dropping the entire from suspension (k-member) since the front k-member crosses through the center of the oil pain..

its a huge pita and very expensive

Yup, as mine hasnt been done. Actually my dads friend worked on mine once he had the car for a weekend at his shop at home. For rear main seal and oil pan gasket, He said he fixed it but ever since ive had light clear oil burning smell smoke come from the hood (top corver on the driver side near the mirror. Weird and it still leaks a tad here and there. Somewhere there is oil burning heh.
