Over heating

Ok so today i noticed my Camaro (95 Z28) was getting hotter then normal. Usually the tact wont go past the half way mark on the guage, but today it was getting close to the red zone. How hot does your normal get? Do you think this is a sign for bad things to come? Since it is completely stock do you think i should upgrade anything? Thanks for the help guys.

Sounds like your thermostat. Did you check your coolant? is the water pump leaking or running properly? Is your sepentine belt still on?

Ok so i changed out the Thermostat and it seemed to help at first. But after about 10 mins of driving it still goes over the half way point.
I put the old one in a pan of water and nothing happened, even when the water was boiling.
Nothing is leaking and the coolant is filled. I checked the oil and it was perfectly fine. Im confused.
I went to 3 differerent places to get thermstat and all i could find was the 180 temp. So i just ordered the 160 but i dont think it will help that much more. Will it?

How close is it getting to the red? When it gets close to the red does it come back down to halfway?

it gets right above the like under the red. Once it gets there it comes back down then back up then back down...etc. I know thats the fan kicking on but it never use to do that. Ive had it since OCT and it never got that hot. Maybe i just never noticed it. I just want to make sure that something isnt about to go wrong.

Maybe a gasket blew, and the coolant isn't going to the right places? Just a thought. My car was overheating when it blew the head gasket.

We did all the work, so it was just the cost of the gaskets.... I would hate to see the bill if you had a shop do it though lol.

serpentine belt wont do anything on his car, LT1 water pumps arent run off a pulley, they are gear driven from the motor.

are you sure your coolant is filled? did you bleed the system? did you bleed the system again? did you bleed the system again? are your fans coming on?

a 160* stat wont lower the temp by much on its own, you will need to reprogram your fans to come on early as well. stock temps for the fans to come on are 225* for the first one and 235* for the second.

what all symptoms are you experiencing from this? besides the car overheating? is it going back and forth? or going up and staying up? are your cooling fans coming on?

Whatever u do... Don't let the temp hit the red or u will be replacing gaskets and heads ! I should know ! Anyway it could be ur waterpump..when mine was going out the temp would stay near the red but when I hit the gas it would go down a bit. ALso make sure nothing blockin ur radiator and try bleeding the coolant system ! If ur not gonna get ur computer tuned a 160 or 180 thermastat isn't gonna help.

I just replaced my water pump, thermostat and a kinked hose and its running like a champ!....anyways man if yours is still overheating i suggest trying all if not some of what i just replaced wasnt difficult to do just sorta a pain to scrape that damn gasket off.
