OD is a little easier on the tranny...

Most people with auto's, stick it in D only when they race

but wouldnt OD be hard on the tranny going around town? it would always be shifting in and out of OD everytime u give it some gas or there's a load like a slight hill. wouldnt this cause alot of wear on the tranny? i heard all the shifting heats up the tranny fluid.. and we all know heat is the biggest killer of tranny's im not sure if its true iv just heard it somewhere

is it just me or is this thread dumb? the only different between drive and overdrive is a 4th gear past 1:1.

I actually had a conversation like this at work with an older lady. Her new Jeep Liberty had the OD button, and she didn't know if she should drive it with the OD on or not. I told her the same thing you said Arch, but there was this other women there saying the exact opposite, but she was just "repeating what my husband told me and he knows cars". I tried, and tried, & eventually gave up. I hate stupid people that think they know everything. :banghead:

yea, which means the tranny is working hard, therefore heating up... im not saying that i know everything cuz i know i dont, im just saying wouldnt it be hard on/wear out the tranny faster if it was in OD all the time around town.. iv driven with it on in town and everytime i hit the gas then keep it steady its always downshifting then upshifting so i thought it would cause wear out it

it doesn't go into od under a certain engine rpm, or speed even the non computer controlled never had an issue and driving in 3rd gear would be harder on the engine, and with a 700r4 can cause problems with the converter switch for lock up

then your throwing money away, you should sell your trans and put a th350 in keep it in od unless towing or in mountains smoother up a hill is because the engine is reving too high (and some imagination too)

is it under warranty? My dad had his replaced(or parts replaced) twice (in his 97 Ram) but now its okay. He had something fixed not long after we got it, and then, he was driving home from droppping me off at my mom's in Ohio, and a few minutes in to the WV border, going down this big hill, a guy behind him flashed his lights, and my dad noticed a little bit of smoke from under the truck, that all of a sudden became A LOT of smoke from under and the front of the Ram. He pulled over to the side of the road, grabbed his couple of belongings, and hopped out. He told me he thought it was onfire, so he bailed out, thinking let it burn, I'll get a new one(it was only a year or 2 old, still under warranty and all that). After a bit it stopped smoking, so he walked down the road till he could get to a phone. It took forever to get fixed, so whe it was they called him up, told him to come get it. They went to move it a bit later to the front of the lot, and guess what happened? It broke again. So they hurried and called my dad, told him not to come down, it was still broken. He kind hoped it would have made it home & then broke again, it was very close to falling under the lemon law.
