Picking up a Turbo Sunday.

So I bought a turbo kit for 2k off Josh on camarov6.com. I'm going to be picking it up from him on Sunday.

Its a full kit off a 2000 V6 Firebird with intercooler.

My car is BONE STOCK. I want to maybe send it to the shop before I install anything and have the engine checked out. The car has 80k miles on it, pretty good shape, I've been good to the engine, but have no idea how the previous owners treated her.

I realize that until I get a new fuel pump, I'm gonna keep the boost down and one eye on the fuel preassure guage.

Do you guys have any recommendations of what I should have checked out and serviced before I slap this kit on to it?

Anyhow, this is what the kit is comming with.

T3/T4 hybrid Garrett turbo
custom made y-pipe
all silicon connectors and band clamps and hoses
intake pipe
both intercooler pipes
Spearco intercooler
flanged down pipe with O2 sensor bung for a Wideband

Tial sport external F38 wastegate
bosch blowoff valve
Vortech 6:1 FMU
Manual boost controller
Turbo is new but i bought a rebuild kit for it because i lost one of the gaskets.
So I am also including theTurbo rebuild kit

6 TR6 sparkplugs already gapped at .035 they only have about 1000 miles on them.

Let me just say congratulations. I can't tell you how much I would LOVE to have a turbocharged FBody.

You're now one of a very few.

Hehe thanks guys. Yeah I'm getty anxious, I'll be heading down to Tucson soon to pick it up, but I'm stuck at home making sure the computers at work don't crash. :banghead: I probably won't get this thing installed for a week or two. I may have to have the high pressure side pipe going to the throttle body modified. 98's of course have the angled throttle body and his 2k is straight.

He mentioned the kit was also designed to fit up to tubular manifolds, so not sure mine will work. I'm guessing I should be able to purchase the 99s and up tublar's from the dealership or something and place them on without much issue.

Anyone done that before? Either way, I'm gonna make the darn thing work lol, I've been dreaming of one since I discovered this site last year.

Turbo is here.

Welp here it is. Now I just need to figure out how to put part A into part B.

I do have a question for you existing FI guys. The exhaust pipe that drives the turbo is the silver one along the bottom of the first image. I'm a bit concerned with the design of pipe. It was setup to connect to the tublar manifolds of the 2000+ camaros. Yet the left pipe comming from the headers looks like it would dump exhaust gasses in an opposing direction to the right side of the pipe. I would think this would cause turbulance and slow the flow of the exhaust gas to the turbo.

Not to mention it doesn't seem to be prime mandrale bent pipes. I'm wondering how much Viper's forward headers cost him?

Anyone have any input on that?

Being that you are just gettin started with boost, I wouldn't be too concerned with trying to eliminate turbulence and all that. Just get it up and running for now.

I honestly wouldn't bother taking the car to the shop. As far as things you can check out- do a leakdown test. Thats a pretty quick and easy way to check out your compression and how its doing. With only 80k on the clock I doubt its bad. You are going to have quite a bit of work to do as it is, so doing that will seem pretty easy to you. I would also check your clutch- see how much life is left in it. Easy way to tell if its getting bad is put it in 5th gear while you are parked and let the clutch out. If the car moves or stalls, then you know its grabbing. If it slips then obviously you are due for a clutch change soon. Also- I assume that the TR6 plugs aren't platinum correct? (I'm too lazy to look right now..) If they aren't then you are all set, if they are might as well pitch them.

The biggest thing I can recommend is don't run a ton of boost right away. Make sure everything is tightened down and securely fastened- esp. your piping. Quick tip- if you spray a little hairspray where you hardpipe meets the silicone piping it will help hold the silicone on the hardpipe- that and double opposing band clamps are highly recommended from me- esp. the pipes that you can't get too really easily.
