Exclamation Problem 3800

ok, i just got the car this weekend its a 96 with the 3800 v6 in it, and the guy said that autozone told him the EGR wasnt working so now the car will idle and not hold a steady rpm and its lacking power and running extremely rich, it doesnt seem like a misfire but its almmost like its being choked, i used to have a camaro a year ago and it had a miss when one of the coils went bad. but this car when i start it, the SES light comes on and about 30 seconds later it starts flashing, but when i get up to about 40 it quits flashing and stays solid, and after about 30 mph it runs pretty smooth, and if i slow down or stop it goes back to flashing and sounds like its being choked again, but i didnt want to speed int he neighborhood so i didnt go over 40, and just to add the car does not stall out, it will idle for as long as i want to and i can rev it up and it will not stall, so does this sound like an EGR to you? im going to buy a new one this weekend but i was just looking for a little assurance in my mind that im looking at the right area, since i dont want to hurt anything by driving it all the way to autozone.

If its an EGR, its terribly stopped up. Keep in mind, the employees at Autozone are far from trained technicians. They know how to stock parts, and typically thats about it. All they do is read the code the scanner throws out and say thats whats wrong with it. Many times an EGR code does not mean its a problem with the actual EGR.

im fully aware that they dont know anything at autozone but how to swap parts, the [revious owner told me he took off the egr once and shook it up and the light went away for a while and when he did it a second time the SES light started flashing

also on that, my old camaro threw the egr code, but never had and real problems running to speak of, the SES light would only come on if i went over 65 and then slowed back down below 65 so i dunno about that one but i replaced the egr on that car and it didnt do jack squat, and chevrolet with all their computers and **** told me it would be an EGR, so i dunno what to do, about the car im hoping the egr swap will just work and i asked a friend who has a 97 camaro with the same engine to pull the plug off his egr to see if it did the same but as expected he wouldnt because he thought his would never run right again

ill put it this way... when I put new headers on, the egr never fully connected right, so there was a gap and I got SES codes a few different times, and in those times one or two was a misfire. It hasnt done it now for a good 6 - 9 months. So yes I believe EGRs can give you an SES and/or misfires. I ******* hate them and they are a pain in the ***.

Ok folks, all fixed, i put on a new EGR and no different, so long story short it turned out to be a ignition coil and an O2 senso, and she runs like new. (not bad for a free camaro

Yea, as I said above, didnt think it would be an EGR. Glad you got it all fixed up though!

hey maybe you can answer something for me, my previous camaro (a 95 3.4l v6) never had a check engine light flashing or anything and when it lost a coil, it lost both plugs on the coil and not one like this one did, and on the 95 it lost 2 cyl on one side. . .
