question about 305s

Dose anyone know if there are like vortec heads for a 305 or any type of better flowing heads for a 305?

code1145 02-05-2008 11:04 PM

Yup. They do make a GM vortec for that engine. Summit sells them, as do alot of other retailers:

However, I'm sure you could do better with GM fast burns, trick flows, etc.

if your gonna buy new heads you could just buy a used 350 and drop that in instead of modding a not so well designed engine (performance wise) thats just my opinion and what i plan on doing when i can find the right car.

I always thought about taking a Stock 400sb head and putting it on a 350. but prob work on a 305... they have Larger Valves.. and dont cost as much as aftermarket stuff.

archemedes 02-06-2008 07:27 PM

the 400 heads suck on the 305, it kills the torque, and lowers compression some too (just what the 305 needs is less power)

MetalliCamaro 02-06-2008 09:45 PM

it does? How do you know that? Experience?

archemedes 02-07-2008 09:12 AM

yep, the other issue is sealing the 400 chamber is bigger than the 305 (over .090 if memory serves) so part of it is not gasketed

i dont have the skill or time to mess with swaping engines i was thinking about doing a stroker kit to 312 i found for a grand n thought i should change heads too cause somwere i saw said if u stroke a 305 u should go with better heads cause the stocks ones dont flow good enough or somin like that

would buying one of them require swaping from TPI to carb?? casue somone told me iits illegal to swap to carb in my state
and as u can tell i dont know squat about these engines

archemedes 02-09-2008 11:25 AM

an engine swap would still be much easier than pulling the 305 and rebuilding it

91z 2 8 02-12-2008 03:18 PM

rly? i woulda thougth rebuilding would be better n cheaper if i could find a cheap engine id think about doin that then

archemedes 02-12-2008 07:52 PM

a rebuild will cost you figure $1500 average if you do it right (with machining everything)

91z 2 8 02-12-2008 09:49 PM

well i wouldnt need a rebuild my car only got 61xxx miles i was jsut gonna do a stroker kit n new heads n whatever else id need
