Rough idle, check engine light

Ok, maybe not rough idle, but my car runs wierd when it's idling. The rpm's will hold between 1000-1500 and every so often (i'd say 3-5 seconds) the rpms dip for just a second and then come back up to the idle speed.

It's like the computer's trying to lower the idle, but can't do it or something.
Any ideas what the problem is?

Also, there's a check engine light, could this be related to the idle issue?

Check the IAC (Idle Air Control) or run a diagnostic code test on it.

i'm tired of sitting and waiting for it to be fixed...

Alright. Let me know what they find out.

archemedes 02-13-2006 02:03 PM

run the code

imported_blade 02-13-2006 02:31 PM

what do i need in order to run the code?
should i take it into a shop to do that?

mxracerbrian 02-13-2006 02:51 PM

find a buddy with a red brick (code reader) or i think some places do that for like 20 bucks

archemedes 02-13-2006 05:19 PM

get a haynes manual and a paper clip, or spend about 10 bucks on a reader at any parts store

mxracerbrian 02-13-2006 06:45 PM

10 dollars??? what kind of reader is this? Ive always only known the expensive ones (snap on)

imported_Kyle 02-14-2006 01:22 AM

Paper clip is the quickest and cheapest way to do it. Thats what i always used on my 3rd gen.

obd1 can use a cheapy the snap on one is the same as the lower priced ones that sell for about $175 at most parts stores

mxracerbrian 02-14-2006 04:41 PM

yeah at my work, we have a couple of them. The snap-on one was a lot more than 175! i think it was well over a $1000!

archemedes 02-14-2006 04:44 PM

snap on = way over priced the tech1 that the dealership I worked at used was only $200, a tech2 runs around $300 off the trucks, or about $200 through the supplier that makes them

mxracerbrian 02-14-2006 04:48 PM

yeah snap-on is really overpriced but thats the brand of choice for my field. Everyone will give you a "lifetime warranty" but that doesnt help you much when your on a job fixing equipment so they can continue working and then a tool breaks! I own a lot of snap-on tools....thier worth the money!

archemedes 02-14-2006 04:52 PM

I own one snap on tool (and it's broken) I prefer mac or their parent company stanley (take a stanley to any wal-mart and they replace it no questions asked even when it shows abuse)mac has mailed me repalcements for screwdrivers that I used as prybars
